WOOSOX BROADCASTER JOSH MAURER TO JOIN MILWAUKEE BREWERSRADIO BROADCAST TEAM FOR 2022 SEASON

After eight seasons with the PawSox/WooSox, Maurer gets the call to the big leagues

He will do radio play-by-play for the Brewers

WORCESTER -- The Worcester Red Sox are pleased to report that one of their broadcasters, Josh Maurer, has earned a job in the Major Leagues. Maurer will join the Milwaukee Brewers radio team in 2022 and will become the 12th former PawSox/WooSox broadcaster currently working in Major League Baseball or the National Football League.

The Milwaukee Brewers and Newsradio 620 WTMJ in Milwaukee made the announcement today that Maurer will join their broadcast team in 2022 as a radio play-by-play announcer. Maurer will be heard on approximately 60 regular-season games this year on Newsradio 620 WTMJ and the Brewers Radio Network. He will fill in for Jeff Levering when Levering handles TV duty for Brewers telecasts on Bally Sports Wisconsin. Maurer will call road games alongside Lane Grindle when Levering is calling games on TV.

Ironically, Levering and Maurer worked together on Pawtucket Red Sox radio and television during the 2014 season as Levering was a PawSox broadcaster in 2013 & 2014 before joining the Brewers for the 2015 season. The pair will return to New England in late-July when the Brewers play the Boston Red Sox for a 3-game weekend series at Fenway Park from July 29-31.

“We took great effort in reviewing candidates to find the right fit for our broadcast team and we are pleased to welcome Josh to the organization,” said Rick Schlesinger, Brewers President – Business Operations. “With more than 19 years of experience on both radio and television, and a deep knowledge and passion for the game, Josh brings great perspective and talent to the booth.”

Maurer was the lead radio and TV broadcaster for the Worcester Red Sox during their inaugural season in 2021 appearing on approximately 65 games on NESN or NESN+ when the WooSox played at home and about 65 games on the WooSox/Cumulus Radio Network when the team played on the road. Overall, he spent eight seasons as play-by-play voice for the Boston Red Sox Triple-A affiliates (2014-2020 with the Pawtucket Red Sox and 2021 with the Worcester). Josh was among the longest-tenured broadcasters in the illustrious history of PawSox/WooSox announcers.

Maurer is the latest in a long line of PawSox/WooSox broadcasters who have received the call to the big leagues. Those include: Gary Cohen (New York Mets in 1989), Don Orsillo (Boston Red Sox in 2001), David Flemming (San Francisco Giants in 2004), Andy Freed (Tampa Bay Rays in 2005), Dave Jageler (Washington Nationals in 2006), Dan Hoard (of the Super Bowl-bound Cincinnati Bengals in 2011), Aaron Goldsmith (Seattle Mariners in 2013), Bob Socci (of the six-time Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots in 2013), Jeff Levering (Milwaukee Brewers in 2015), Will Flemming (Boston Red Sox in 2019), and Mike Monaco (ESPN & Boston Red Sox fill-in in 2020). Amazingly, all are still with the teams that hired them directly from Pawtucket except for Orsillo who is now the TV voice of the San Diego Padres.

Maurer, 40, was hired by the PawSox in February of 2014, in essence to replace Bob Socci who left the PawSox in July of 2013 to become the radio play-by-play broadcaster of the New England Patriots. Josh would go on to call nearly 1,000 PawSox/WooSox games while working alongside former PawSox partners like Levering (a current Milwaukee Brewers radio/TV broadcaster), Will Flemming (current Boston Red Sox radio voice), and Monaco (current ESPN broadcaster and Red Sox fill-in on NESN) as well as current WooSox broadcasters Jim Cain, Mike Antonellis, and Jay Burnham.

Maurer made his Major League debut with the Boston Red Sox in July of 2015 when he did play-by-play on NESN for seven Red Sox games during their West Coast trip. In September of 2021 he filled-in for a pair of Philadelphia Phillies games doing play-by-play on NBC Sports Philadelphia.

During the baseball off-season, Josh is the radio voice for the Boston College men’s basketball team after holding a similar position with the University of Massachusetts (both basketball and football) from 2008-2018.

Maurer broke into Minor League Baseball in 2005 and spent four seasons as the radio play-by-play broadcaster of the Charleston RiverDogs, the Single-A affiliate of the New York Yankees in the South Atlantic League. He spent the 2012 and 2013 seasons with the Yankees’ Double-A affiliate, the Trenton Thunder, in Trenton, NJ before arriving in Pawtucket.

Josh received his degree in Broadcast Journalism with a Minor in Sports Marketing from the University of Maryland in 2003. A native of Lower Merion, PA (just outside of Philadelphia), he currently lives in Worcester.

"While I am elated to take the next step in my broadcasting career, it is bittersweet because of the wonderful experience I have had in Pawtucket and then Worcester for the past eight years,” said Maurer.

“Aside from the thrill of calling games at storied McCoy Stadium and then at beautiful Polar Park, this job has been so gratifying because of the great people I have been fortunate enough to work with. I will always cherish the relationships with all of my broadcast partners, as well as the players, coaches and front office members - each of whom helped make my time in the Red Sox organization so memorable."

"I would like to thank Mike Tamburro and Bill Wanless for the faith they showed in my abilities by first bringing me into the venerable PawSox booth; and Larry Lucchino, Charles Steinberg and Dan Rea of the WooSox for their constant support of my career and of our broadcast product,” he added.

“And a huge thanks to all the friends I have made in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, both in the front office and in the local media, who have all made an impact on my life that I will never forget."

Josh now joins the stellar lineup of Brewers on-air talent with the distinguished Bob Uecker, returning for his 52nd year behind the mic, alongside Levering and Grindle on Newsradio 620 WTMJ. Levering will continue to call games on radio and television this season. Brian Anderson will handle play-by-play on Bally Sports Wisconsin for approximately 50 games, joining lead analyst Bill Schroeder and sideline reporter Sophia Minnaert. Tim Dillard will serve as the primary fill-in analyst for Schroeder on select broadcasts.
