7 student deaths in 6 months at WPI , how to catch the signs of someone is struggling with emotions.
WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS – A student was found dead in an off-campus apartment last week, according to Worcester Polytechnic Institute. It's the seventh death in less than a year.
Although the cause of the most recent fatality is still unknown, WPI reports that many deaths have been caused by suicide. According to the school, the increased number of deaths on campus can create tremendous pain for students and employees who are coping with the losses.
Dr. Allison Beckler, a local psychiatrist, works with young children and families, as well as people who are grieving. She believes it's critical to look for warning signs if someone is grieving the loss of a family member or acquaintance.
" Beckler said. "Are they spending more time alone, they're not reaching out, they're not calling others? You also want to look out for physical changes, appetite changes, is their eating changing, are they not enjoying food, their weight changes?"
Low energy and frequent napping are two more warning signs, according to Beckler, who also feels that no one should be ashamed to seek help when they need it. WPI is expanding its mental health services for students.
