BOSTON — One person died and three others were injured when an SUV traveling the wrong way down a Boston freeway Saturday morning struck three other vehicles, state police said.

Preliminary investigation indicates the SUV was traveling southbound on the northern lanes of Interstate 93 around 2:30 a.m. when it struck two northbound vehicles, causing non-fatal injuries to the drivers.

The oncoming SUV struck the third vehicle, also causing non-fatal injuries to the driver.

The misdirected SUV came to a stop on the road and the adult driver was pronounced dead at the scene, state police said. The other three drivers were taken to Boston Medical Center.

No name has been released.

The accident, including why the SUV was heading in the wrong direction, is still under investigation.
