Finally Be Able To ‘Breathe Again’

As of Wednesday Minnesota, Department of Corrections had 41 prisoners being held in the isolated unit and joining those inmates now is Derek Chauvin 45, the former Minneapolis police officer who knelt on George Floyd neck for more than nine minutes last May.

On Tuesday Chauvin was found guilty by 12 jurors of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.

The Judge has postponed sentencing to a later date however Chauvin was taken into custody and led out of the courtroom in handcuffs.

Wednesday, Chauvin spent his first full day at the Minnesota Department of Corrections maximum-security prison in Oak Park Heights, Minnesota where he will remain in solitary confinement for 23 hours a day.

Sarah Fitzgerald, a spokeswoman for the state prison system said Chauvin has been placed in an isolated wing of the prison because of fears for his safety

Following the guilty verdict against Chauvin, Floyd’s brother said that the family would finally be able to ‘breathe again’ and tears streamed down his face as he likened Floyd to the 1955 Mississippi lynching victim Emmett Till.
