Pence criticizes Trump, and Trump reacts.
Former President Trump replied to former Vice President Mike Pence's assertion that he lacked the authority to reverse the presidential election results in 2020.
“Just saw Mike Pence’s statement on the fact that he had no right to do anything with respect to the Electoral Vote Count, other than being an automatic conveyor belt for the Old Crow Mitch McConnell to get Biden elected President as quickly as possible,”Late Friday night, Trump issued a statement through his Save America PAC.
He cited the fact that Democrats and some Republicans, called "RINOs" for "Republicans In Name Only," are attempting to amend the Electoral Count Act as proof that the election was rigged.
Last month, several Republicans and Democrats indicated interest in reforming the 1887 election law, with numerous amendments being considered, including boosting the number of members who must object before Congress can vote on contesting a state's Electoral College slate.
Another proposed modification would explain the vice president's involvement in the certification process.
On Tuesday, a group of Senate Democrats revealed their proposal to alter the law.
Trump's condemnation of Pence was unusually mild, as he avoided a harsher rebuke of his former vice president.
They do, however, highlight a schism between the two on Pence's role in the certification of the 2020 presidential election results.
Following Trump's claims of a rigged election, a pro-Trump crowd attacked the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, in an attempt to prevent Congress from recognizing the 2020 election results.
There has, however, been no proof of significant voter fraud.
Pence, who is seen as a likely presidential candidate in 2024, delivered a fiery rebuke to Trump on Friday at a Federalist Society event in Florida, in which he suggested that the vice president had the right to change the results of the previous presidential election.
Reps. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) and Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) were censured by the Republican National Committee for their earlier criticism of Trump and their participation in the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.
