National News (Tennessee) — The Justice Department said Saturday that a former top deputy of the Grundy County Sheriff's Office in Tennessee was convicted of federal civil rights violations on Friday.
According to a news release from the Justice Department, Anthony "Tony" Bean, 61, was found guilty of using excessive force against two persons he had detained in 2017, one during his time with the sheriff's office and the other during his time as chief of police in Tracy City.
Bean repeatedly hit the victims in the face while they were handcuffed, causing pain and other injuries, according to prosecutors. The Justice Department stated, "Tony Bean boasted about using excessive force against his victims and neglected to record his uses of force."
Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke said that federal prosecutors "will not stand idly by in the face of criminal misconduct by law enforcement officials."
